Burgundy – Franche Comté
This year we embark on an unforgettable voyage through the heart of Burgundy’s Franche-Comté region, where serene waterways and rich heritage converge. Our journey flows through peaceful rivers and historic canals, winding past storybook villages, lush vineyards, and timeless countryside.
Each day brings a new experience—whether it’s navigating a quiet stretch of the River Seille, cycling along the tree-lined paths of the Canal du Centre, or strolling through cobbled towns rich with character and history.
We’ll explore book-lover’s havens, medieval river towns, and wine country treasures. Highlights include visits to renowned estates like Domaine de la Folie and Château de Pommard for private tastings, as well as time in Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy. There’s room for spontaneous adventure too, perhaps a visit to a goat cheese farm or an optional* hot air balloon ride at sunset.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1: Branges to Cuisery
We set off in the afternoon from Branges (just 4km from Louhans train station), cruising down the peaceful River Seille through hand-operated locks to the book village of Cuisery. After a stroll into town, enjoy a relaxed dinner aboard.
Day 2: Saône River to Chalon-sur-Saône
We join the majestic Saône River, stopping in the quaint town of Tournus before continuing to Chalon-sur-Saône, known for its medieval timbered houses, towers, and historic charm.
Day 3: Canal du Centre & Wine Tasting
We turn onto the Canal du Centre, ideal for cycling. After lunch in Chagny, we’ll visit Domaine de la Folie to taste their exceptional Rully 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques.
Day 4: Beaune & Optional Balloon Ride
A morning train brings us to Beaune, Burgundy’s wine capital. After exploring the town, we enjoy a tasting at Château de Pommard. In the evening, an optional hot air balloon ride offers sweeping views over the vineyards.
Day 5: Santenay to Gergy
We continue to Santenay for a cellar tour and tasting at Domaine de Château. After lunch, we return via the canal and Saône River to Gergy. If time allows, we’ll visit a local goat cheese producer.
Day 6: Gergy to Verdun-sur-le-Doubs
We cruise north to Verdun-sur-le-Doubs, a charming riverside town perfect for a leisurely lunch stop. Cycling along the canal remains an option for those who wish.
Day 7: Return to St. Jean de Losne
We end our cruise at the boat base in St. Jean de Losne and enjoy a final dinner ashore, celebrating a week of wine, waterways, and countryside charm.
Day 8: Departure
Disembark in the morning after breakfast.
